Abstract painter William LaChance designs St Louis basketball court for Project Backboard

Painter William LaChance has designed an abstract, technicolour basketball court in his native St Louis, Missouri, for Project Backboard. The initiative aims to transform public basketball courts, using them as “a canvas for creative expression to strengthen communities and inspire multi-generational play”.

The artist is known for his vividly coloured, graphical abstract paintings, which are exhibited in the offices of NBC and Nike, and sell online for up to $9,000.

Collaborating on the project in Kinloch Park in his home city, William and Project Backboard took a dilapidated pubilc court and spruced it up with modernist abstract shapes filled with a spectrum of bright hues. William marked up the composition by hand before the mural was painted, and also created matching backboard designs for each hoop.
